His grandfather James and his father John were both Ministers of Independent congregations. His conversion on a snowy winter's Sunday in a primitive Methodist Chapel in Colchester is well known, and Spurgeon himself often alluded to it. He was 15 years old. He was persuaded at that time that the Baptist teaching concerning Believer's Baptism by total immersion was truly Scriptural. (This is evident in the way he adapted the Westminster Shorter Catechism to produce a Catechism for his own congregation, which we reproduce here.) He was baptised with others in a local river and he joined a Baptist Church.vP‘CćK& €” €€‚‚‚’At the age of 16 he preached his first sermon in a cottage at Teversham, near Cambridge. By 1851 he was preaching regularly to a baptist congregation at Waterbeach, a village near Cambridge. Although only 17 years old, they called him as their Pastor. In 1854 at the age of 20 he accepted a call to what was regarded as possibly the most important Baptist Chapel in London - New Park Street Chapel. There he began a ministry in the Capital that lasted 38 years.By the time he was 22 he had become the most popular preacher of his day, preaching in the huge Surrey Gardens Music Hall to many thousands. In 1861 the Metropolitan Tabernacle at the Elephant and Castle, South London was built. It seated 6,000 and Spurgeon ministered the Word of God there to a packed congregation. Frequently there was no standing room left and many hundreds outside still wanting to get in. He continued his ministry there until his death in 1892 aged 58. He suffered ill-health throughout much of his life, especially in his latter years, but he preached and spoke frequently in the course of each week and his writings were prolific. It has been claimed that no other author in the world has so many of his works in so many editions in such numbers in print today, or ever, as Spurgeon has. He founded orphanages and a Pastor's College for the training of Preachers.·‡mFšN0 .€€€€ €€ €‚’The centre and substance of Spurgeon's work was the Preaching of the Word of God. In his preaching and teaching he followed in the true Puritan Tradition. Throughout his life, from the time of his conversion until the day he died, sometimes in the face of much criticism, he held firmly to the great Doctrines of Grace. He held the Bible doctrine of "Particular Redemption" and at the same time he put a clear emphasis upon the "Free Offer" of the Gospel. He has been called the last of the Puritans - but perhaps the late Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones deserves that title. Certainly Spurgeon well deserves the title "The Prince of Preachers".8ćKŅN# €*€€‚’Frederick SerjeantŒ\šNj‚0 .€¹€€€‚‚€ €‚‚’His CatechismIt was published about Oct 14, 1855, when Spurgeon was 21 years old. On Oct. 14, he preached Sermon No. 46 to several thousand who gathered to hear him at New Park Street Chapel. When that sermon was published it contained an announcemenŅNj‚±Bt of this catechism. The text that morning was, "Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations." Ps. 90:1.NOTEThe Catechism reproduced here is an accurate reproduction of the original text - with the exception that HEADINGS HAVE BEEN ADDED to each section. For the most part they are the headings used in the Westminster Shorter Catechism ( where they fit - for Spurgeon left some Questions out ) and new headings have been added for the closing sections on Baptism and the Lord's Supper.
