You may read the account in the Bible - in the Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 16 from verse 11 to the end of the Chapter. The question may be found in verse 30.The answer given by the apostle Paul was, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved."In other words - there wasn't anything he had to DO - he simply needed to put his trust in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour.a8) "p This is brought about by the hearing of the Gospel.& # +7 < We are accounted (reckoned) righteous with God through faith in Jesus Christ and His completed work of salvation, which He accomplished through His sufferings and His death on the cross. Romans 10.17( $ f\ I `; JUSTIFICATION BY FAITHTherefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:1-2This was the great (re)discovery that Martin Luther made at the time of the Reformation. True Christians are "justified" (i.e. accounted righteous in God's sight) by faith alone. As you may read in the four "Gospels" in the New Testament section of the Bible - He went about doing good. He healed the sick and raised the dead. But above all He proclaimed the Way of Salvation.I;M0 .=He then went to the Cross of Calvary where he suffered death by crucifixion as the substitute sacrifice (the Lamb of God) for sinners who would believe on him.If we read the accounts carefully, we shall understand that His sufferings were not merely physical - great though they were, but deeply spiritual. Acts 16:316N j xf ! What does the word "believe", as used in the Scriptures, really mean? Giving mental assent? Accepting an idea as true? That one agrees, for instance, with the statement that Jesus Christ truly was born as man and died a horrible death on a cross - believing that this is historically true? This is not believing in the spiritual dimension of the word. Millions of Muslims believe in Jesus Christ this way, but they are not in "the way of salvation". Our Lord Himself, in His earthly ministry found those who failed to believe with "saving faith". Though he taught them the truth clearly and though he performed mighty miracles in their presence, they still did not truly believe the Gospel. (Read John's Gospel 10:24-38)be_ ! "㧎7 |To believe means that one puts one's trust completely and only in Jesus Christ as one's LORD (master) and SAVIOUR and in His completed and finished work on the cross for the personal forgiveness of one's sins and the gift of eternal life. This trust or faith is always "repentant faith" and is God-given - we cannot earn it or deserve it - it is all of grace. We come to God as deep-dyed sinners, with sorrow for our sins humbly asking for forgiveness - longing to be reconciled with Him.Y)V0 .S"Saving faith" will be expressed by a hunger and a thirst (a deep inner passion) for Him, which can only be satisfied by partaking of His life and Spirit.Jesus said unto them, "I am the bread of life. he who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes on me shall never thirst." John 6:35,36.True believers experience times when their faith is weak and their desire for their Lord is diminished - but their trust remains in HIM and in no one else and nothing else. We are NOT born again because we repent or believe! All men are born dead in trespasses and sins (see Ephesians 2:1) Those who are spiritually dead are incapable of repentance or faith. "Coming to the front" or "Putting up your hand" or "Signing a Decision card" or even "Making a Decision for Christ" will not save anyone. Neither are we saved by "Inviting Jesus into my heart" or by "Giving our hearts to Christ" (What does He want with our old sin-laden hearts?) -R r!o4| mݏThe lesson to be learnt by those who teach such things is that "Salvation is of the LORD". Jonah 2:9Before we are born again our hearts are full of sin. "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" Jeremiah 17:9 In the new birth one is given a new heart and a new spirit. We are saved by His sovereign grace! The Holy Spirit must first give us spiritual life, before we can come to God in repentance and faith.: B#tR After We Have Come to Repentance and FaithIf we have been born again, it will be our desire to obey our Lord's command to be BAPTISED (immersed) in water.
